Firefly
The Photinus firefly, found throughout eastern North America, is known for its bioluminescent flashes during summer nights. Males signal in flight to attract females using rhythmic light patterns. While commonly called “lightning bugs,” they are actually beetles. A fun fact: their larvae are nicknamed “glowworms” and also emit light!
